The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
